Submited By: Joram Nowak on 02/10/2008 Ok so the product arrived 2 days after ordering it, which is nice. Everything was packaged nicely. I ordered the 500gig HDD with it as well, which I had to format on windows xp to a NTFS. Took a bit of time, but that's normal. The instruction manual is really helpful, and helped me out for setting it up. It is a bit disappointing they only give you COMPOSITE cables with the device, when it's designed for high definition HDTVs... they could have at least packaged components in it, but it's not a big problem.
So of course once I had it set up with an HDMI cable, I tried it out. And this thing is fantastic! Almost every file I threw at it played flawlessly... except a 1080p mkv file I tried had very block, smeary thing happening. But this was remedied with a simple upgrade of the firmware, which is really easy to do. Just download the file and put it on the harddrive, select it when you're in the menu, and it will prompt you to upgrade. It takes a few minutes, and lo and behold, my file worked now! DTS sound, 1080p picture, x264 encoding... smooth all the way.
This is definitely worth the money. The only regret I had was not researching further and getting the upgraded device, the 6500... plays more file formats. This one here doesn't play mp4 containers and doesn't do WMAPRO sound, which it clearly has labeled on the website. So it's my fault for not reading the fine print.
Networking works fine, although I prefer to copy things over USB2.0, since it's faster. And I tried playing files off an attached 500gig usb external drive (NTFS), and it worked nicely as well. So overall I'm very impressed with the product and can't wait to see what the next firmware upgrade will bring, because frankly it's just about perfect as it is now.
